Chistes de palabras o puns

Cuando estamos escuchando un audio en ingles, o cuando conversamos con alguien, frecuentemente se utilizan expresiones que son utilizadas como chistes. This kind of soft jokes are called puns.

A pun, is usually referred to as a "Dad joke" with a very mild sense of humor. Para los venezolanos y los latinos en general este tipo de humor es algo tonto. Por ejemplo, el pun muy conocido a nivel infantil es el chiste:

Why is 6 afraid of 7?
Because... 7 eight 9!

Aqui observamos el típico pun con el Dad joke, imaginate a un señor diciendote: "Because seven eight nine! aha! did you get it?! aha!"

Para los que aun no lo captan, es un juego de palabras y sonidos, la palabra eight suena como ate. Because seven ate nine... (Doh! )

Los stand-up comedians utilizan puns mucho mas sofisticados, que generalmente se refieren a eventos en el contexto local para lograr hacer el chiste.

Recientemente el cantante de rap, Eminem, hizo mención a la transición de Caitlyn Jenner a mujer, diciendo la expresión:

"no pun intended, but this took a lot of balls"Eminem

Aquí observamos el juego de palabras, it took a lot of balls, because we can all imagine what a transgender male surgery can "take out" of your body, and also at the same time acknowledging that you as a male have to be very brave to change your gender with a surgery because it is a definitive change. That use of words with double meaning is what is called a sophisticated pun, and as you know rappers must not only be quick speakers but also what they say has to have meaning.
